It became a hit after it was composed and sung by the highly acclaimed musician Mostafa Said, based on a poem by Tamim al-Barghouti, which the latter recited shortly after the breakout of the 25 January 2011 protests.</text>

<text>In this video clip, Mostafa Said appears with the veteran poet Ahmad Fouad Negm on BBC Arabic. Negm, who passed away. in 2013, was famous for writing sharp vernacular poetry against the oppressive political regimes of former presidents Anwar El-Sadat and Hosni Mubarak and had a strong following particularly amongst those Egyptians who participated in the 1970s student movement. Here, he comments on Barghouti's lyrics (written and sung in the Egyptian vernacular) and Said's singing. The appearance of these two generations of artists together shows the continuing tradition of protest songs. in Egypt. Negm spent years sitting next to his music partner Sheikh Imam, who also played the oud (lute) and was also blind, like Said. Mostafa Said represents a new generation who have been influenced by Sheikh Imam. Said sang this song on Tahrir Square amongst the protestors. </text>
