In Egypt, the practice was banned in 2008. However, during the short-lived Islamist-dominated parliament elected in December 2011, there were attempts to decriminalise it. Moreover, under the Muslim Brotherhood presidency, the government refused to sign the UN Declaration against Violence against Women in March 2013, much to the anger of Egyptian women activists.
