Description
An account of the resource
This cartoon was created in the wake of the referendum approving the 2012 Egyptian constitution. It criticises the new constitution for failing to grant women equal rights. The long beard, which is literally preventing the woman from speaking, symbolises the Islamists/Muslim Brotherhood.
The constitution was opposed by women's rights and human rights activists as well as artists for its failure to protect human rights and freedom of expression.
The cartoonist, Doaa Eladl, is probably the most famous female Egyptian cartoonist and is well known for her satirical and political cartoons. She was a strong critic of the Muslim Brotherhood during their year in power.
