The Era of Love

Subject

Political Cartoon

Description

This cartoon satirises the large number of political prisoners held under the regime of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. In the first few months following the July 2013 army coup, the government arrested thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters. However, the circle of repression soon expanded to include secular activists, including many figures associated with the 2011 revolution.
According to Human Rights Watch, "The authorities detained, charged, or sentenced at least 41,000 people between July 2013 and May 2014, straining Egypt’s prisons and aggravating hugely overcrowded conditions in the police stations and security directorates where the Interior Ministry [ ] holds detainees, many of them without trial. [...] The authorities have also used unofficial facilities, including military bases and security agency sites to house detainees. Torture and ill-treatment at these facilities are routine." This level of political repression is unprecedented in Egypt.
Andeel is known for his satirical and highly critical cartoons of the Sisi regime. He also produces a satirical show on YouTube.
