Description
“This is Chaos” (Hiyya Fawda, in Arabic), is an Egyptian-French 2007 co-production and the last film by internationally-acclaimed Egyptian director Youssef Shahin before he passed away in 2008. It made waves in Egypt when it was shown for its open representation of police brutality in the country and can be considered as part of the growing mood of discontent in the run-up to the 2011 revolution. Set in Cairo’s working-class district of Shubra, the film depicts the violence and cruelty of a corrupt police officer, feared and loathed by the residents of his neighbourhood. Police brutality was one of the main causes that triggered the 2011 uprising, which began with demonstrations to coincide with National Police Day.
