Maryam Saleh - Nixon Baba Live
مريم صالح - نيكسون بابا - حفل
Subject
political song
Description
In this video, recorded in Ramallah, at the 2012 Palestine International Festival, Egyptian singer Maryam Saleh sings 'Nixon Baba', originally written by Ahmed Fouad Negm and Sheikh Imam, who were popular for decades amongst left-wing circles for their revolutionary and satirical lyrics and whose songs were widely sung during the 2011 revolution.
The song mocks then President Sadat for welcoming then US President Richard Nixon, who, at the time, was facing impeachment hearings for the Watergate affair.
Sheikh Imam was a friend of Saleh's father and a mentor to Saleh. She began singing Sheikh Imam songs in 2008. After 2011, she released original music, including the albums 'Mesh Baghanny' (2012) and 'Lekhfa' (2017), which combine rock and 'oriental' music and touch on both political and personal themes. Saleh is part of the independent or underground music scene that flourished in the wake of the 2011 revolution.
